Upside Down Text Generator

Flip your text uʍop ǝpısdn instantly. Copy and paste upside down letters anywhere.

What Is an Upside Down Text Generator and How Do You Use It?

An upside down text generator is a free tool that turns your words into flipped Unicode characters, so “Hello World” becomes plɹoM ollǝH and reads correctly when the screen is turned 180 degrees. Type in the box above, tap a style to Copy it, and paste it anywhere.

A standard keyboard has no upside-down keys. The tool swaps each letter for a look-alike, mostly turned letters such as ɐ for a and ʇ for t, so the result is real copyable text, not a picture. It is real-time conversion: the cards update as you type, and Clear empties the box.

On TextAura, two styles lead the page. Upside Down flips each character and reverses the order, while Flipped (not reversed) flips each character but keeps the order. Both handle lowercase Latin letters, uppercase, numbers and punctuation. Our mirror text and reversed styles sit in the same group, and the Mirror Text Generator has more of them. All 97 styles sit below.

People use flipped text for jokes, riddles, social media bios, TikTok captions and Discord chats. Keep it short, though, because screen readers cannot read it as words.

What Is Upside Down Text?

Upside down text is text written with characters that look rotated, so “upside down” becomes uʍop ǝpᴉsdn. It is a novelty style, and a tool that makes it is often called a text flipper.

It is not made with custom fonts or special keys. Instead, it borrows real characters from Unicode, which holds more than 100,000 characters. Many flipped letters come from the International Phonetic Alphabet, where turned shapes such as ɐ and ɥ already exist to write sounds, while ǝ (a turned e) comes from an extended Latin block. Wikipedia’s Turned letter article lists many of them.

Upside down text is also different from backwards text. Writing dlroW olleH only reverses the order of the letters. Upside down text turns each letter over as well, so the whole line looks as if someone rotated the page.

You will see it in chat apps, in a “what’s the opposite” thread, and anywhere people want a playful twist. From experience, it gets the best reaction on one short line, not a full paragraph.

How Does Upside Down Text Work?

Upside down text works by swapping each character for an upside-down twin from Unicode and then reversing the order, so the line reads correctly when rotated.

Upside-down writing is a rotation of words or characters by 180°, but no font effect is involved. The tool keeps a flipped counterpart for each of the 26 letters in both cases. Those stand-ins come from phonetic writing, mathematical writing, math symbols and other special markers.

Some swaps are simple. A b turned over looks like a plain q (U+0071), and an n looks like a plain u (U+0075), so those use ordinary letters. Others need rarer characters, which you can browse in the official Unicode IPA Extensions chart.

The second step is the reverse. dCode offers Right to Left Writing and Writing in Reverse as separate tools, and an upside down generator combines one of them with the flip. dCode notes that its own code, in languages such as Python, Java, PHP, C# and Matlab, is not public unless an explicit open source licence applies, and that it does not offer API access or offline use. The idea itself, though, is just a mapping.

How Do You Use This Upside Down Text Generator?

You use this upside down text generator by typing your text and tapping the Upside Down or Flipped card to copy it.

There is no Convert button to press. Follow these steps:

  1. Type or paste your text into the box at the top. Capitals, small letters and digits all work.
  2. Look at the first two cards: Upside Down, which is flipped and reversed, and Flipped (upside down only).
  3. Tap a card to copy it.
  4. Paste it into your bio, post or chat.

Typing Hello World gives plɹoM ollǝH in reversed order, or Hǝllo Moɹlp in normal order. A single word such as “twist” becomes ʇsᴉʍʇ. Our tool has no Try an example button, so just type a short word to start.

Behind each card sits a lookup table, the same design every inverted text generator uses. Writing backwards and upside down text by hand takes four steps for every message, so a tool saves real time. Before you post, open Preview on social apps to see the text in an Instagram, TikTok or X style layout.

Which Characters Can Be Flipped Upside Down?

All 26 letters, the digits 0–9 and most punctuation can be flipped, because the Unicode standard has a look-alike for each one.

Our substitution table covers A–Z, a–z, 0–9 and . , ? ! ‘ ” ( ) [ ] { } < > & _. Here are some of the swaps it makes:

CharacterFlippedWhere it comes from
aɐLatin small letter turned a (U+0250)
eǝLatin small letter turned e
h / wɥ / ʍLatin small letters turned h and turned w
A∀For all, a math symbol
E / T / UƎ / ⊥ / ∩Reversed E, up tack and intersection
B / Kꓭ / ꓘLisu letters
PԀCyrillic letter
2ᄅHangul letter
6 / 99 / 6The two digits swap

The mix of Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Hangul and Lisu characters is why results vary between sites. Calculate uses a Deseret letter for capital B, while we use a Lisu letter, and both can show as an empty box on some devices. Our capital K is also Lisu, while lowercase l needs no change.

There is no flipped j, so we use ɾ. Parentheses and brackets swap direction. dCode publishes a similar map. These Unicode names, such as for all and Latin small letter turned a, are also what assistive tools read aloud.

What Is the Difference Between Upside Down, Flipped, Reversed and Mirror Text?

Upside down text flips each letter and reverses the order, flipped text only flips the letters, reversed text only changes the order, and mirror text flips letters sideways.

Calculate shows three versions of one phrase: the classic upside down effect, a flipped-letters version and a plain reversed version, and explains that the last two apply just one half of the process each. Its example, Kia ora New Zealand, keeps its two spaces in every version:

TypeWhat it doesCalculate’s example
Upside downFlips letters, then you reverse the entire stringpuɐlɐǝZ ʍǝN ɐɹo ɐᴉʞ
Flipped, original orderFlips letters onlyʞᴉɐ oɹɐ Nǝʍ Zǝɐlɐup
Reversed onlyReads right to left, letters stay uprightdnalaeZ weN aro aiK
MirrorFlips each letter sidewaysSee our mirror page

Other tools hide this choice in Settings. CodeShack has a Reverse Text option that is checked by default; if it is unchecked, the letters flip but the text order stays the same, which is harder to read. Convert Case offers Upside down and reversed or Upside down only. Our page skips the default setting step and shows both, as Upside Down and Flipped. For order alone, use our Reversed style or a text reverser such as Kwebby’s Reverse Text Generator.

Where Can You Use Upside Down Text?

You can use upside down text almost anywhere that accepts typed text, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter (X), WhatsApp, Reddit, YouTube comments and forum posts.

It also works in web browsers such as Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and in phone apps. A flipped bio line stands out. Kwebby’s example turns “Coffee first, code later.” into ˙ɹǝʇɐl ǝpoɔ ‘ʇsɹᴉɟ ǝǝɟɟoƆ, which is exactly what our Upside Down card gives too. dCode flips I love you into noʎ ǝʌoן I, a cute message to send. Fans of Stranger Things use it for posts about the Upside Down.

Watch the limits. Every app has its own platform limit, and older devices with minimal fonts may show gaps. The text is not an image, so a missing character breaks the look instead of staying fixed. Add a plain version for anything important.

For headlines that grab attention, pair a flipped word with a bold text generator for Facebook, such as our bold text generator.

What Are the Best Practices for Upside Down Text?

The best practices are to flip one short line, keep a plain copy next to it, and test it where it will appear.

Check the length first. Convert Case shows Character Count, Word Count and Line Count, and Calculate counts 19 characters for its example. Our Preview on social apps has counters too, and our word and character counter works like any Word Counter.

Test on another device. On old systems, rare characters can show as black squares. Emoji, accented letters such as é, other diacritics and other scripts stay upright, because they have no flipped twin.

Avoid it where exact typing matters: passwords, gaming usernames you must type to log in, email subjects and important text messages. Kwebby keeps its Upside Down mode inside its reverse tool for this kind of playful use.

Think about accessibility. A developer write-up quoted by Kwebby called screen-reader output “incredibly frustrating”, because letters are announced by names such as mathematical fraktur g. For accessible emphasis and plain-text accessibility, keep a normal version. For a messier look, a glitch text generator like our Zalgo text generator is another option.

How Do You Type Upside Down on a Keyboard?

You cannot type upside down directly on a keyboard; you type normally and let a generator swap the characters for you.

No special keyboard setting or language pack adds flipped letters. You could copy each one from an alphabet table, but that is slow, and upside-down text handwriting is easier on paper than on a screen.

Instead, type into an input box. Kwebby calls it Your Text box, and dCode labels it Text to flip upside down with a Transform text button. Some tools even let you Dictate. Every letter and the digits 0 to 9 flip instantly. Typing “Hello” shows the idea: reversed it is olleH, and fully upside down it is ollǝH.

A few marks can be typed. The inverted question mark ¿ (U+00BF) is Spanish punctuation, so it is on the Spanish keyboard layout or in the system character picker. Some people use £ (the British pound sign, U+00A3) as a flipped J, but it comes from the Latin letter L, for libra. Some sites offer two-way conversion; ours only flips normal text.

Is Upside Down Text a Font?

No, upside down text is not a font; it is plain text built from Unicode substitutions that copy and paste like any other letters.

Many sites call themselves an upside down font generator, but the work is character mapping. Each letter is replaced by a lookalike from the phonetic alphabet or another Unicode block. A real font such as Wingdings only changes how letters are drawn, so its symbols show only where that font is installed, and people need a Wingdings Translator to read them.

Because flipped text is text, it pastes into usernames, games, documents, design mockups, posters and slides with no Browser Extensions or installs. The downsides are that platform search may not find it and screen readers read it letter by letter.

The same trick powers superscript, subscript and small caps styles. Calculate has a Superscript Generator, wordcount offers 13 styles, and our small text generator makes tiny letters.

How Do You Turn Upside Down Text Back to Normal?

You turn upside down text back to normal by keeping your original words, because our generator only flips text from normal letters.

If you paste flipped text into our box, the cards will not decode it. Some tools can. Convert Case has Flip Upside Down and Flip Back buttons, and it also offers an App Store iPhone/iPad App and an Android App. CodeShack works both ways: paste into Input Text in the left-hand box, then read the right-hand box. Kwebby shows its result in a Flipped Output box.

Knowing the pattern also helps you read it by eye. Convert Case’s example “Party” becomes Ԁɐɹʇʎ when flipped, ytraP when reversed and ʎʇɹɐԀ when fully upside down. Turn the phone around and it reads normally again.

That makes flipped text good for puzzle answers, quiz solutions or a spoiler tag, because readers have to rotate the screen to see the answer.

Why Do Some Characters Stay the Same or Look Wrong?

Some characters stay the same because they look identical when turned, and others look wrong because a site picked an odd stand-in or the device lacks a font.

Letters with central symmetry, such as O, S, X and Z, have no inverted twin and stay as they are. Sites also choose different stand-ins. CodeShack writes Hello as oןןǝH, Omni shows ɥǝןןo and oןןǝɥ with a Hebrew final nun for l, dCode writes its name as ǝpoϽp, and Convert Case uses a box-drawing ┴ for T in ˙ʇxǝʇ uʍop ǝpᴉsdn ɟo ǝldɯɐxǝ uɐ sᴉ sᴉɥ┴.

Characters outside the basic Latin alphabet pass through unchanged, so letters with macrons stay upright. Brackets swap sides, so “Call now (today)” becomes (ʎɐpoʇ) ʍou llɐƆ.

If you see empty boxes, often called tofu, the font lacks that Unicode block. Messaging software with an old character encoding can break the text too. Wordcount shows an “N of M converted” line so you can see what changed.

Can Screen Readers Read Upside Down Text?

No, screen readers usually cannot read upside down text as words; they read each character’s name or skip it.

Flipped letters are different Unicode code points, so ɐ is announced as a symbol, not as “a”. Kwebby points to a developer write-up on inputoutput.dev that describes how confusing this is. A listener hears a string of odd names instead of your sentence.

Keep names, links, dates, prices and instructions in normal text, and flip only decorative words. Even a Text Reverser output is easier, since the letters stay standard, although the backwards words still sound wrong.

If your post carries a key message, write it plainly first, then add the flipped line as decoration underneath.

Is There an Upside Down j or Question Mark?

There is no true upside down j in Unicode, but there is a real upside down question mark, ¿.

Omni Calculator notes that no standard flipped lowercase j exists, so generators borrow. We use ɾ for j and ſ (long s) for J. The question mark and exclamation mark are easier, because each already has an inverted character, ¿ and ¡, used in Spanish.

Our tool flips ? to ¿ and ! to ¡ automatically, so “How is your day?” becomes ¿ʎɐp ɹnoʎ sᴉ ʍoH. That makes a fun line for trivia posts and social media comments. dCode also covers related number tricks, including Roman numerals. If you need these marks often, copy them from the Upside Down card instead of hunting for them in a symbol menu each time.

Why Did Leonardo da Vinci Write Backwards?

Leonardo da Vinci wrote backwards mainly to keep his notes private, and possibly because mirror writing was easier for him as a left-handed person.

His notebooks do not run left to right, so they read normally only in a mirror. Mirror writing is a cousin of upside down text: both hide words in plain sight.

dCode files its upside down tool under Fun/Miscellaneous and Steganography, the practice of hiding messages, and its reverse tool turns “Reverse” into esreveR. Today it is a party trick rather than real secrecy, since anyone can rotate a phone or hold up a mirror. That is part of the fun: a flipped line makes readers stop and work for the message.

Is the Upside Down Text Generator Free?

Yes, the TextAura upside down text generator is free, with no account, no software download and no signup.

Many competitors promise no text limits; our box takes up to 500 characters, which is plenty for bios and posts. The flipping runs in JavaScript in your browser, so your text does not need to be uploaded to a server, and the converter does not keep it logged or stored anywhere. Only your favorites and recent styles are saved, on your own device. Wordcount calls its version Private, and Kwebby also needs no account. It works on PC, mobile and tablet.

Omni lists five steps and Kwebby three steps; ours is type, tap and paste. dCode lets you cite it under Creative Commons CC-BY and export as CSV or TXT. Kwebby’s Text Tools include Word Counter Pro, Change Text Case (UPPERCASE, Title Case, camelCase, snake_case), Line Counter and a Lorem Ipsum Generator, with reading time and speaking time. Wordcount links a Small Text Generator, Cursive Text Generator and Strikethrough Text Generator, and Omni links an italic text generator and small caps generator.

Our own versions are the text case converter, cursive text generator and strikethrough text generator. How flipped text displays depends on third-party platforms. More tools are on the TextAura home page.
