Underline Text Generator

Underline text anywhere: single, double, wavy and dotted underlines that copy and paste.

What Is an Underline Text Generator and How Do You Use It?

An underline text generator is a free tool that adds a line under your letters, like U̲n̲d̲e̲r̲l̲i̲n̲e̲, so you can copy and paste underlined text into bios, posts, comments and chats that have no underline button. Type your text in the box above, then one click copies the style, ready to paste.

The line is a horizontal line made from Unicode, not formatting. Each letter gets a combining diacritical mark, usually U+0332, that draws a short underscore (_) beneath it. Together the marks look like one underline, and they travel with your text wherever it goes.

On TextAura, six underline styles appear first: Underline, Double Underline, Wavy Underline, Dotted Underline, Overline and Bold Underline. Below them sit 97 styles in total, so you can also try Bold Cursive, Gothic and other looks, then switch styles until one fits.

Underlined text works best in short bursts, such as an Instagram Bio name, a Discord Username, a WhatsApp Status, a TikTok Caption, a Reddit Comment or a YouTube Description header. It is eye-catching for a “Happy Birthday” or a “24/7” opening hours line, but hard to read in long paragraphs.

What Is Underline Text?

Underline text is text with a line drawn under each letter, used to stress a word, mark a title or make a phrase look like a link.

The habit is old. Underscoring a word was the standard way to show a story or poem title in handwriting and typing, long before italics were easy to produce. Today it still signals “this matters” at a glance.

There are two very different ways to create it. A word processor or web page applies underline as formatting, and that formatting is lost when you copy the text into a social app. Unicode underline is part of the text itself: an invisible mark follows each letter, so “Hello” becomes H̲e̲l̲l̲o̲ wherever you paste it.

Two combining marks do most of the work: U+0332 for a single line and U+0333 for a double line. Because they are standard characters, No Installation Required is true for every user, with no font files or browser extensions on your side or your reader’s side.

How Does Underline Text Work?

Underline text works by placing a combining mark after every character, and the mark draws a line under the letter before it.

One site calls this “super cool unicode text magic”, but the idea is simple. A combining mark has no width of its own; it attaches to the previous character, just like an accent on é. Unicode has hundreds of combining marks, and the low line, the double low line and the double macron below are the ones that look like underlines.

This mirrors old word processing tricks. On a typewriter, people underlined by typing a word, backing up and typing underscores over it. Unicode does the same job automatically, mark by mark.

Some generators also use symbol characters instead of marks. Shapes like ⌣, ▁ and ═ can sit under or beside letters for a decorative effect. Others first convert letters into bold or sans styles from the mathematical alphanumeric symbols block, then add the underline mark, which is how our Bold Underline style works. You can check every mark in the official Unicode Combining Diacritical Marks chart.

How Do You Use This Underline Text Generator?

You use this underline text generator by typing your text, tapping an underline card to copy it, and pasting it where you want the line.

There is no formatting button to press, and no Convert step either. Follow these steps:

  1. Type or paste your text into the box at the top of the page.
  2. Look at the first six cards, the underline styles.
  3. Tap a card to copy it.
  4. Paste it into your bio, post, message or document.

Try a few short words first, such as “Hello”, “Love”, “Good vibes” or “Best friends”, to compare the styles. Underline is a strong choice for section headers and key takeaways in a YouTube description, while wavy lines suit playful captions.

Our tool works in plain text fields as well as rich ones, because the result is just characters. It is browser-based and Mobile Friendly, so it works the same on a phone or laptop. Other sites advertise 29+ underline fonts, but most use the same handful of marks.

What Underline Styles Can You Choose From?

You can choose from six underline styles on our page: single, double, wavy, dotted, overline and bold underline.

Here is how they look and when to use each:

StyleSampleUnicode markBest for
UnderlineH̲e̲l̲l̲o̲U+0332 low lineNames, links, titles
Double UnderlineH̳e̳l̳l̳o̳U+0333 double low lineStrong emphasis
Wavy UnderlineH̰ḛl̰l̰o̰U+0330 tilde belowPlayful captions
Dotted UnderlineH̤e̤l̤l̤o̤U+0324 diaeresis belowSoft, decorative notes
OverlineH̅e̅l̅l̅o̅U+0305 overlineMaths, special labels
Bold Underline𝗛̲𝗲̲𝗹̲𝗹̲𝗼̲Bold sans + U+0332Headlines

The standard single line works on almost all platforms, while decorative lines are more about looks. Other tools offer Variant and Combinings controls, a double macron below, or catalogs of 393 styles. Our marks work on A–Z, a–z and 0–9, so all 26 uppercase letters, 26 lowercase letters and 10 digits get a line.

Use the single line for a tagline or call-to-action. A good rule for decorative lines: rarely, and only on a word or two.

Where Can You Use Underline Text?

You can use underline text almost anywhere that accepts typing, including social bios, captions, comments, chats, texts and documents.

On social apps, it works in Instagram and TikTok bios, Facebook posts, X posts, Reddit and YouTube comments, Discord messages, and one guide even lists Roblox, though each app may display it slightly differently. One tool even suggests underlining browser bookmarks, since bookmark names accept Unicode too.

It also helps where formatting is limited. Plain text messages, texts between phones, and fields without a toolbar can still show a line, because the line is part of the characters. Pick a compatible style, usually the single underline, for the best support. For TikTok bios and captions, our TikTok font generator has more looks.

Where formatting is available, use it instead. A rich text editor, HTML-supported emails and documents in Word or Google Docs have their own underline button, usually Ctrl + U, which is cleaner than Unicode. The generator is for everywhere else: it highlights important text in places that would otherwise show it plain.

What Is the Difference Between Unicode Underline and HTML Underline?

Unicode underline is part of the text and survives copy and paste, while HTML underline is formatting that only works on web pages and documents.

Here is how the two compare:

FeatureUnicode underlineHTML underline
How it worksA combining mark on each letterThe HTML <u> element or CSS text-decoration: underline
Copy and pasteKeeps the lineLoses the line outside web browsers
Social bios and chatsWorksNot supported
LookCan vary by fontClean, even line

HTML adds a formatting layer on top of plain letters, so the letter shapes stay normal and the browser draws one even line. Unicode marks are drawn letter by letter, which can leave small gaps.

Other generators add extras such as manicules (☛) pointing at text, a stabilized underline, Monospaced and underlined text, Sans serif and underlined text, or arrow underline and dashed underline styles. These are all Unicode tricks. For a web page you control, HTML is still the better choice.

When Should You Use Underline Text?

You should use underline text rarely, for one word or a short phrase you want to stress, because underlined text is harder to read in long passages.

Underline also mimics a link, so readers may try to tap it. That makes it useful for “Link in bio”, “Click here” or “Read more”, and confusing elsewhere. Online, underlining links is less common than it used to be, so a plain underline now reads more as emphasis.

The typography writer Matthew Butterick, in Butterick’s Practical Typography, describes underlining as a typewriter habit from the days of backing up the carriage, when typewriters had no bold or italic. That is a good reminder: if you can use bold or italic, they are usually easier to read, and our italic text generator makes that easy.

Competitors give their underline sets names like Guidance, Swanky Guidance, Classic Guidance, Vintage Guidance, Silicon Guidance, Vintage Ellipses, Swanky Ellipses and Silicon Ellipses, but the rule is the same for all. One underlined word can lift engagement on a caption, while underlined hashtags may not be found by search, so leave hashtags plain.

What Can You Write With Underlined Letters and Numbers?

You can write any English word and number with underlined letters, because the mark attaches to every letter and digit you type.

Accented letters such as é also take the line, because the underline mark sits below while the accent sits above. Small headings, a Facebook post title or a few key terms are good uses. Our tool underlines every character except spaces, so a phrase shows small gaps between words.

Underline pairs well with other effects. You can combine it with Small Caps, Upside Down, Superscript, Subscript or Mirror styles, but avoid Zalgo, whose stacked marks clash with the line. Copy Text from one style, then paste and add another style around it. For tiny capitals, see our small caps text page.

Other sites name their underline styles like brands: Underhill, Count Underhill, Dashing, Counter Dashing, Dapper Dashing, Silicon Dash, Lanes, Chic Lanes, Counter Lanes, Green Shell, Jaws, Skyline, Contra Skyline and Train Tracks. Most mix the same marks with different base letters.

Why Use an Underline Text Generator?

You use an underline text generator because it highlights important text in apps that have no underline button, without typing marks by hand.

Typing a combining mark after every letter manually is slow and easy to get wrong. A generator does it in one step, which is why tools list benefits like Highlights Important Text, Easy Copy and Paste and Better Social Media Visibility. Underlining follows a classic convention, so readers understand it instantly.

It is also handy for online content that is shared widely. A line under a word survives broadcasts and group chats, where formatting would be lost. YayText lists styles such as Under-arrow, Under-seagull and Under-asterisk, plus Underline (double macron) and Underline (low line), which shows how many marks can sit under English letters.

This is not rich-text formatting or a downloadable font. It is plain Unicode, which is why it works for everyone with nothing to install.

Is Underline Text Real Formatting or a Font?

No, underline text is neither real formatting nor a font; it is plain text with Unicode combining marks added after each letter.

The marks are defined by the Unicode Consortium, so every modern device understands them without plugins. Wikipedia’s article on underlining covers the history of the style in more depth.

That also explains a claim you may see: one site rates Unicode underline as Search Engine Friendly. In practice, search engines and apps often treat a word with marks as a different word, so do not underline keywords you want people to find. Informal styles such as wavy or dotted lines are fine for standout phrases, not for important text.

Why Does the Underline Look Broken or Uneven?

The underline can look broken because each mark is drawn under one letter at a time, and some fonts leave small gaps between them.

This is technically different from a real underline, which is one continuous rule drawn by the app. Fonts that are not designed for these marks place them at slightly different heights, so the line can dip or break between letters and at spaces.

Decorative styles show this most. Competitor sets such as Underhand, Underhand Chic, Swanky Underhand, Gulls, Dapper Gulls, Vintage Gulls, Swanky Gulls, Chic Gulls, Silicon Gulls, Meow, Modern Meow, Chic Meow, Swanky Meow and Silicon Meow use rarer marks that render less evenly.

There is no font file to fix this, because the look depends on the reader’s device. Some apps also strip combining marks completely. If a line looks rough, switch to the single Underline style, which is the most even. Remember too that underlined text is harder to read online, so keep it short.

Does Underline Text Stay When You Copy and Paste It?

Yes, underline text stays when you copy and paste it, because the marks are part of the text and go to the clipboard with it.

That is why it works in apps without underline support, such as Telegram bot descriptions or chat bios. Copy & Paste is the whole point of Unicode underline, and Easy Copy and Paste is what makes it useful.

A few apps strip the marks, and the line is stripped silently. If it disappears, try the double underline for stronger emphasis, or check the app’s own formatting. Individual chats and group messages in most apps keep the line.

How Do You Underline Text on Instagram?

You underline text on Instagram by pasting Unicode underlined text, because Instagram has no underline button in bios, captions or comments.

Type your words in the input textarea, copy the Underline card, and paste it into your bio or caption. A single underlined word, such as Aesthetic or your name, gives better social media visibility in crowded feeds without hurting readability.

Instagram is different from Discord, where __text__ markdown creates a real underline in the desktop app and mobile app. Instagram has no markdown, so Unicode is the only option. Always preview before publishing, since the line may look slightly different on other phones. For more Instagram styles, see our Instagram font generator.

How Do You Underline Text on Discord?

You underline text on Discord by wrapping it in two underscores, __like this__, in messages, or by pasting Unicode underline where markdown does not work.

Discord’s markdown only works in chat. For a server nickname, profile name or status, paste a Unicode underline style instead. Some tools pair this with an Invisible Text Generator for blank names, but readable names are easier for friends to find.

Unlike Instagram, which has no native underline formatting in posts or direct messages, Discord gives you both options. Other tools offer extra Discord-style marks such as underline-curly, underline-sm, underline-double, overline-curly, double-tie-below and plus-below, and some let you apply styles to the selection only. For more Discord looks, see our Discord font generator.

Will Underline Text Look the Same Everywhere?

No, underline text will not look exactly the same everywhere, because each device and app draws the marks with its own fonts.

YayText shows its styles in 19 screenshots per style, 76 images in total, across SMS, Facebook and Twitter on iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows, Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer, so you can compare how each one renders. Expect small differences in height and small gaps.

The same applies on macOS and professional sites. On LinkedIn, underlined professional headlines or certificate names may look neat on one screen and uneven on another. With hundreds of thousands of possible mark combinations in Unicode, stick to the common single and double lines for the most consistent result.

Is the Underline Text Generator Free?

Yes, the TextAura underline text generator is free, with no signup, no character limits, no hidden fees and no premium tiers.

Competitors promote 100% Free, No Signup Required and Works Everywhere, and some describe their process as three steps or four steps. Ours is just type, tap and paste. It is ad-free inside the tool, responsive, and works on smartphones and tablets as well as computers.

Other sites name their underline styles Barrowland, Haute Tracks, Monolithic Barrow, Ruled Paper, Serif Tracks, Shellac, Posh Barrow, Midari, Alley Oop, Ironclad, Double Under, Triumvirate, Gutter, Cartesian Monolith, Dot Vault, Foundation, Monolithic Arrow and Tramline. They mostly combine the same marks with bold, serif or monospace letters. For a line through text instead, try our strikethrough text generator, or see the bold text generator and fancy text generator. More tools are on the TextAura home page.
